| JELENA ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN AT BEIJING OLYMPICS

9 August 2008, Beijing, China - UNICEF National Ambassador for Serbia  Jelena Jankovic advocated for the equality of girls at the UNICEF China-hosted Champions for Children event held the day after the glittering opening of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Ms. Jankovic and a 14 year old female tennis champion Liu Yingchong introduced a new media campaign organized by the non-governmental organization All China Womens Federation, in partnership with UNICEF, which will advocate for equal opportunities for girls. Chinese girls are still discriminated against due to the strong traditional attitudes favoring male children and do not have equal access to education or participation in sports.

The event brought together high-level representatives of the Government of China, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors Jackie Chan, Lang Lang, and Jelena Jankovic, many Chinese celebrities and other friends and supporters of UNICEF to advocate for children affected by the Sichuan earthquake, children affected by HIV/AIDS, and girls equality.
