Jelena gained her first point in Doha, after the world number one Dinara Safina was forced to retire due to a back injury. It was 1:1 in games and two break points for Jelena when Safina retired.
Safina, who has been struggling with a back injury for some time, broke down in floods of tears during her second service game before immediately walking to the chair and ending the white group contest and her tournament.
The result puts Jankovic firmly back into contention for a semi-final berth in Doha, after her tournament had been left hanging by a thread with an opening day loss to Victoria Azarenka.
Jelena's next opponent will be Danish teenager and this year's US Open runner up Caroline Wozniacki.
