Clijsters, Henin, the Williams sisters, beware! Jelena Jankovic is eager and ready to enter another big battleground of the WTA tennis tour in 2010. The Serb’s focus in the new year will be on the number one rankings position, as well as on winning a first Grand Slam title of her career. Jankovic has been working on improving her game in the past couple of months, in order to improve on her current,
unsatisfactory position number eight in the WTA rankings.

The fighting spirit Jelena is radiating and the willingness to see every point out have only gained momentum during the gruelling preparations in Florida, as she articulates her primary goals for the forthcoming season.- - “My unfulfilled dream is to ascend to the top of the WTA rankings and I expect nothing less in 2010. That can only happen if I go and claim some big events,” says Jelena.
He first opportunity to stake her claim will come as soon as mid-January, in the scorching summer heat of the Australian Open.

- “I spent part of the winter break in Belgrade and the other one in Italy. I rested for three weeks and then went for the USA, where I began my preparations for the 2010 season. I enter the new season with high expectations and ambitions in order to return to the very top. I trained in Florida for over a month so that my preparations would contribute to a positive start to the season. I really hope for the best,” Jelena is optimistic.
The Serb has been successful at Grand Slam events so far, having won a doubles title at Wimbledon two years ago and would take it one step further and win a singles Grand Slam tournament.
- “I would be ecstatic to win the Wimbledon. This is every single tennis player’s dream. I’ve claimed a doubles title once in London, a game I have never really mastered and I hope I get to lift a singles trophy one day,” said Jankovic.

The Serbian tennis heroine has gained immense experience performing at top level in the past couple of seasons and she knows what it takes to return to the top. She reveals what element of play she has particularly been working on.

- “I have been working on improving all elements of my game. Predominantly it’s been my fitness, which is essential in an exhausting WTA season, but also the serve. I think there is still room for improvement in that respect,” says Jelena.

Year 2010 in tennis should resemble 2007 and previous seasons leading up to that one, as the women’s tour will once again feature the greats such as Belgian stars Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters. The Serb is accordingly aware the battle for the women’s tennis crown is to get even a more formidable task.
- “The extra competition will motivate me even further to work even harder and differently in order to be able to be on par with the world’s best. Regardless of everything, I think I am capable of winning a Grand Slam title and restore my number one spot,” the world’s eighth player said.

Jelena’s form in the first month of the new year will be also important because of her appearance at the Fed Cup event, as Serbia entertain Russia in a tie in Belgrade in February. The women’s tennis team’s line-up may still be without its biggest stars – Dinara Safina and Maria Sharapova.

- “We still don’t know what kind of team Russia will field against us in the Fed Cup in Belgrade. They have so many excellent players that they could create a few very good teams,” said Jelena.
